Online security is always in the minds of our customers. With the recent large cyber-attacks on massive firms of banks and service providers of late, it is no wonder that many customers are dubious about giving their details out and allowing them to be stored online.

Data protection needs to be undertaken seriously and as a business owner, you need to ensure that you not only compile to the minimum standards but also try to exceed these.

One comprise can cause you to lose potentially millions of customers and have a knock on affect for years to com. CRM software is often used to store sensitive data about a customer such as names, address, phone numbers and even account details. If using a CRM system then you need to ensure that it is secure and that you are storing your data in the correct way. The market is flooded with marketing software that you can buy or lease that promises to increase your sales or improve your business. Finding out if the software is worthwhile investing in can be tricky as you cannot take just take the word of the sales person trying to sell it to you. You need to invest some of your own time looking into reviews and ideally factual figures to see how well the software works and if it is going to do what you need it to.

When searching for reviews, be dubious to believe all that you read on the software companies own site or linked sites such as Facebook, Google Plus etc as these can have been fabricated, instead try and find a third party impartial site.

Always ask for a free trial of software before you commit to it to see how it works and if you are not happy with the trial then do not be scared to ask for more time.

If you use social media software for your business then you are probably aware of how time consuming it can be. Firstly you need to create separate profiles on all the social media sites (and you may even need more than one if you want to do it via department for example). Once you have set all the accounts up you will then need to log in to them individually to post status updates, photos / videos or to reply to comments etc.

There are some great social media software packages that allow you to do this all under one roof. You can log in and create posts and chose when and where to publish it to. It could be that you want it n Facebook and Twitter for example, and want to schedule it for the following day.

Many of these software applications charge a monthly fee for the use of their system, but be sure to check how long you are tied in for and always try and get a free trial of the software before agreeing to purchase it.

Using web stats to find out more about your customers

Many servers come preinstalled with website statistics package but often these are quite basic. If you have a website for your business then you may wish to invest in another stats package to enable you to really analyse what is happening within your site. Google offer a free stats package called Google Analytics and it can be easily installed on to any website. Once the code has been installed, the software will start tracking visitor information.

The wealth of information is quite astounding, and you can even find out what devices or browser your visitor used to view your site, along with the pages they visited and the time spent on the site.

If you want to take it a step further, you can even install spate software to show you where most people clicked within the page to find out which banners / call to actions are working the best for you.
